Our volunteer intern program is designed for young artists to gain practical experience in theater administration and production. As a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, Chance Theater internships are volunteer positions.
Cycles
Chance Theater volunteer intern positions are available in three distinct cycles:
Full Season
January 1 – December 31
Spring
January – April
Apply by December 1st
Summer
May – August
Apply by March 30th
Fall
September – December
Apply by July 1st
Requirements
Internship Applicants must:
- Be a college student, recent graduate, or have some practical knowledge and experience in theater.
- Be able to commit to 15 to 30 hours per week over the full course of the internship period.
- Interns should expect to be at Chance Theater at least 3-5 days each week for 4-8 hours per day.

Internship Areas of Interest
Description
Artistic Administration Intern reports directly to the Artistic Director (AD). Intern acts as a support to the AD in order to learn the various tasks that go into the administration and artistic vision of a non-profit theater.
You Will Learn

Duties May Include but Not Limited To
- Play Readings as part of the Literary Committee
- Basic Administrative Skills and Clerical Tasks
- Note-taking and Observation of Designer Run-Throughs
- Note-taking and Observation During Production Meetings
- Calendar Management
- Clerical Tasks such as Copying, Scanning, and Organizing Materials
- Assist at Chance Theater special events, including Opening Nights

Description
Company Management Intern reports directly to the Managing Director (MD). Intern acts as a support to the MD in order to learn the various tasks that go into the administration of a non-profit theater.

- Assist in reaching out to local businesses for partnerships and fundraising opportunities

Description
Development and Fundraising Intern reports directly to the Development Director (DD). Intern has the opportunity to learn about the various areas of fundraising in a nonprofit setting, including but not limited to individual gifts, foundation grants, corporate giving, and special events.

- Preparing acknowledgement & thank you letters (mail merge & hand written)
- Research on corporate, foundation, and individual donor prospects
- Brainstorm subscription promotion possibilities

Education Intern reports directly to the Education Director (ED). Intern acts as a support to the ED for Chance Theater’s ongoing youth and adult classes, Theater for Young Audiences program, and the teen Speak Up Summer program.

Description
Marketing and Digital Communications Intern reports directly to the Managing Director (MD). Intern has the opportunity to take part in and learn about marketing campaigns in various forms including print, on-line, and social media.

- Help brainstorm and execute subscription campaigns
- Help write copy for brochures, website, e-blasts, letters, promotions
- Help update company website in coordination with Managing Director
- Utilize social networking sites to drive ticket sales
- Help manage email lists and email marketing
- Help Manage Google Grant, Analysis / Research of Google Analytics.

Description
Production Management Intern reports directly to the Production Manager (PM) while also working closely with the current stage managers and theater staff. Intern has the opportunity to engage in the process of Production Management from start (Concept Meeting) to finish (Strike).

- Providing back-up to Production Manager for Tech Prep, Preview Set-Up, Maintenance
- Observing and Notetaking for Production Meetings
- Assisting with Contracting and Budget Tracking
- Provide Clerical Support through Data Entry, Research, Copying, Scanning, and Organizing Materials
- Clerical tasks such as copying, scanning, and organizing materials

Description
Special Education Intern reports directly to the Education Director (ED). Intern acts as a support to the ED for Chance Theater’s on the Speak Up Summer program for teens on the Autism Spectrum. Special Education guidance and training will be provided by Asha Desai Bhakta, PhD., BCBA-D and Creative Solutions for Hope.

Duties May Include but Not Limited To
- Facilitate Activities during Speak Up
- Organize and Run Activities for TYA Relaxed Performances
- Assist in the development of lesson plans and theatre exercises
- Provide one-on-one behavioral support OR implement behavioral strategies in a 1:1 setting
Specific Requirements
- Educational background in Special Education, Psychology, and/or Speech Therapy
- Experience working with teens with special needs directly or indirect experience working with teens, (i.e. volunteering, boys and girls club, babysitting).
- Some Experience in Live Theatre
- Good Written and Verbal Communication Skills
- Ability to Collaborate, Analyze and Problem-Solve
Description
Technical Production Intern reports directly to the Technical Director (TD) while also working closely with the current stage managers and designers. Intern has the opportunity to engage in the process of building a show from start to finish in multiple technical areas.
You Will Learn

- How to Read Scenic Draftings and Groundplans
- Hands-On Scenic Building Experience
- Proper Set Construction, Load-In & Strike Safety Principles
- How to Budget and Troubleshoot Scenic Designs
- Proper Organization & Maintenance of Props, Costumes & Backstage Areas
Duties May Include but Not Limited To
- Providing Assistance for Tech Prep, Preview Set-Up, Maintenance
- Help with Strikes and Load-Ins
- Assist with Builds, Light Hang and Focus, and Audio Load-in
- Assist with Repairs to Maintain Current Shows
- Assist Designers during Load-In and Previews
- Maintain Technical Facilities on a regular basis
